Chief Executive Officer of Exclusive Events Ghana, organisers of Miss Ghana beauty pageant, Inna Mariam Patty says ideally Miss Ghana contestants are supposed to be virgins.

According to Patty, as a Miss Ghana contestant you are not even expected to have a boyfriend throughout the contest.

Patty made these remarks on Paul Adom Okyere’s show Good Evening Ghana on METRO TV on Thursday night, August 9, 2018.

Responding to the question whether the contestants are not supposed to have sexual intercourse, she said: “Absolutely OK… I’m sorry to say that… But let me give you an instance… You know growing up, in our cultural, typical cultural setting, maybe should I say it’s more like Islamic, you’re not supposed to have [a] boyfriend. When the man comes into your life, he comes to formerly introduce himself and say I’m interested in your daughter. That’s why they go like, oh we’ve this flower we want to pluck. So, that’s the kind of values we hope they would uphold,” Patty explained.

According to Patty if a contestant is not a virgin, it means she is not a ‘Miss’, hence, do not even qualify to be crowned Miss Ghana.

She also debunked allegations that the contestants are sometimes arranged for men to take advantage of them.

“Like I mentioned, it’s not true! And if you do have the names of whosoever you feel that I’ve deliberately arranged for the person to take advantage of you, please forward us those names, okay,” Patty said.

Accusations by former winners

For several months now some former beauty queens have made some allegations against the organisers of the pageant, including arranging for men to take advantage of them.

Other allegations are that organisers of the pageant do not give winners their full package promised them.

Barely a fortnight ago, reported of the resignation of Margaret Dery, winner of the 2017 edition of the Miss Ghana beauty pageant. The reasons for her resignation were unclear.

Inna Patty has since used various channels to ‘clear’ the issues up and has said that the awards are not the principal motive of the pageantry; Ghana comes first.

However, the 2018 edition of Miss Ghana pageant was launched on Thursday, August 2, at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra amidst allegations all the allegations against the organisers.
