University students drown in Cape Coast

At least two University students have drowned in Cape Coast, the police has confirmed.

The students are reported to have gone to participate in National Union of Ghana Students [NUGS] and Ghana Union of Professional Students [GUPS] Conference at the University of Cape Coast [UCC].

Five of the students went for sightseeing at Oasis beach in Cape Coast when a strong sea waves took them deep into the sea, the Public Relations Officer [PRO] of the Police Command in the Central Region, ASP Irene Serwaa Oppong explained.

According to ASP Irene Oppong, when the incident occurred on Thursday, August 16, 2018 around 5pm, some eyewitnesses helped to rescue four of the victims leaving one in the waves.

ASP Irene Oppong said one of the rescued, Lily Ampofowaa died on arrival at UCC hospital. Faustina Akaime, Sharon Ayebah Donye and Frank Boateng are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital.

ASP Irene Oppong further indicated that the student who was not rescued is called Sarah Kwarteng.

The students are from UCC, Kings University in Kaosa, Garden City University, Kumasi and University of Education, Wenniba campus in Mampong, ASP Irene Oppong noted.

According to ASP Irene Oppong, the police is still investigating the circumstances that resulted into the incident.
