Kpone Landfill Site to resume 24hr operations

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has called on the management of the Kpone Landfill Site to resume its 24-hour operations to bring the current disruption in sanitation in the region under control.

“The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources would also work around the clock to ensure that the additional landfill sites are fully operational to serve the region” stated Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs of the Assembly.

He said the recent disruption was as a result of the closure of the Nsumia Waste Disposal Site, located in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality off the Accra Nsawam highway while the Kpone Landfill Site has also not been fully operational since Saturday April 14, 2018.

He stated that this situation has caused refuse trucks directed to the Kpone disposal site to experience abnormal long queues.

“The situation has been compounded by the reduction in the already short eight hour operational period and also not working on Sundays,” he added.

Mr. Ankrah noted that the situation has also resulted in the delay of AMA and private service providers refuse collection trucks at the landfill sites hence the backlog of waste being spotted at various locations across the city.
