AWCON 2018 to give face-lift to Ghana football – Chairperson

Freda Prempeh says the AWCON will give a face-lift to Ghana football

The chairperson for the Local Organising Committee [LOC], Freda Akosua Prempeh says preparation is still underway for the Africa Women Cup of Nation to be hosted in Ghana from November 17, to December 1, this year.

Madam Freda Prempeh says there is no way for compromise in the preparation for the hosting of the 11th edition of AWCON, which is officially called Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, since it is going to give a face-lift to Ghana football.

According to Freda Prempeh, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tano North Constituency in the Brong-Ahafo region, ‘Accra Sports stadium and Cape Coast Sports Stadium are the two main stadia for the tournament.’

“In Accra, the training pitches are PRESEC and Elwark. In Cape Coast the training pitches are Robert Mensah Sports Stadium and Paa Kwesi Nduom Sports Stadium,” she indicated in an interview on Peace FM on Monday morning, September 4.

According to Madam Prempeh, infrastructure was initially the main challenge, ‘but you know the Cape Coast Stadium is not that old, so there wasn’t much work there. As I’m talking to you now the pitch is in order.’

She says, the Paa Kwesi Nduom Sports Stadium which is quite new has few renovation work to be done on the pitch; which work is even far gone on it.

According to Madam Prempeh, the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium was the one that is quite old and had a  major renovation to be done there. ‘So far the contractors are working on the changing rooms which they’ll hand over in two weeks time,’ she indicated.

“At the Accra Sports Stadium, there was major renovation be to carried out there. But by God’s grace, the contractor has been able to do much work; all the changing rooms are ready. They’re repairing the seats, scoreboard and the floodlights. We’ve given them two weeks to finish with them,” she indicated.

Ms Prempeh further indicated that ‘through the kind gesture of the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the changing rooms at the Elwak Stadium have been renovated,’ while the pitch is still under renovation.

According to the LOC chairperson, somewhere last week, the committee met with all the contractors working on the various stadia and gave them two weeks to handover.

Madam Prempeh said the draw for the tournament is expected to be done in Ghana this September, ‘meaning officials of CAF and Participating countries will be in country to inspect the readiness,’ hence the need to get things done as soon as possible.

She says next week, there will be the inauguration of the Cape Coast venue,  unveil their mascot, website and theme song for the tournament, and also organise an Accra venue air road.

Freda Prempeh however, debunked a report that went viral on social media couple of days ago that CAF has withdrawn the AWCON hosting right from Ghana.

She thus appealed to all to offer support to make the tournament a success. She was quick to add that organisation for the AWCON has been very challenging, ‘because women do not get the necessary support they need when they have such a responsibility at hand, you have to go the extra mile as a woman in such a situation.’

Madam Prempeh however, assured Ghanaians of a successful AWCON come November 17, to December 1, this year.
